For small scale domestic solar thermal systems, where performance demands are not too critical, it is normally acceptable to install a system based on ‘rule of thumb’ sizing recommendations.
However, where system demands become more critical – for instance where the system is required to provide domestic hot water heating through an extended quota of the year, or where the system is designed to supplement the space heating – system sizing and design become much bigger issues.
